Al Zubarah
The best-preserved 18th-19th century pearling and trading town in the Gulf, founded by merchants from Kuwait on Qatar's coast - a walled settlement of palaces, mosques, courtyard houses and a fortified harbour, buried and protected by drifting desert sand after its destruction in 1811 and final abandonment in the early 20th century.
