Cave of Altamira
Cantabrian cave whose painted bison ceiling, identified in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola and his daughter Maria, became the first cave art ever proposed as prehistoric - and was dismissed as a forgery by the scientific establishment for over 20 years before comparable European finds forced acceptance in 1902.
