Aten (the 'Lost Golden City')
Egypt's largest known city of its era, founded under Amenhotep III around 1386-1353 BCE on Luxor's west bank and remaining in use through Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Ay's reigns into the Coptic period. Zahi Hawass's team found it by accident in 2020-21 while searching for Tutankhamun's mortuary temple, and its Pompeii-like intactness after three millennia - full streets, houses, workshops, even bakeries with tools still in place - led Egyptologist Betsy Bryan to call it the most important Egyptian find since Tutankhamun's tomb.
