Banda Islands
Ten small volcanic islands that were, until the nineteenth century, the world's only source of nutmeg and mace. The Dutch East India Company took the monopoly by force in 1621: the population of some 13,000-15,000 was killed, enslaved or driven out, and about a thousand were left as forced labour on the plantations.
