Bloody Ridge (Edson's Ridge)
A grassy ridge of two hills, Hill 123 and Hill 80, about 1.5 km south of Henderson Field (now Honiara International Airport) on Guadalcanal; Japanese troops called it the Centipede. From 12 to 14 September 1942 US Marines of the 1st Raider and 1st Parachute Battalions under Lieutenant Colonel Merritt Edson held it against night attacks by Major General Kiyotake Kawaguchi's brigade of about 6,000 men. The Japanese suffered heavy losses and the Marines 104 to 111 killed; a memorial now stands on Hill 123.
