Burana Tower (Balasagun)
An 11th-century minaret in Kyrgyzstan's Chüy Valley, the oldest standing structure of its kind in Central Asia and the last major landmark of Balasagun, capital of the medieval Karakhanid khanate on the Silk Road - the city itself was sacked by the Mongols in 1218 and abandoned within two centuries, leaving the earthquake-shortened tower as its principal surviving monument.
