Butrint
The most important archaeological site in Albania and one of the finest in the Balkans - an Illyrian settlement that became a Greek colony by the 8th century BCE, then a Roman city, then a Byzantine bishopric, its well-preserved theatre and baptistery reflecting successive Greek, Roman and Byzantine layers before the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages as marshes overtook it.
