Cerberean Cauldron
The eroded remains of a Late Devonian volcanic collapse structure in central Victoria, Australia: a 27 km ring fracture around ash-flow rhyolites hundreds of metres thick, whose volcanic rocks now form the Cerberean Ranges near Marysville and the Rubicon valley.
Dated events and their evidence
- about 374,000,000 years ago mainstream
the central block of the Cerberean Cauldron founders after huge rhyolitic ash-flow eruptions, in the Late Devonian (Wikipedia gives about 374 million years ago) source - 1978 CE mainstream
Birch and colleagues publish the detailed mapping that makes the Cerberean Cauldron a classic example of cauldron subsidence source
Where
37.3300° S, 145.8500° E
Approximate: a point in the Rubicon valley inside the 27 km ring fracture. Birch et al. (1978) put the cauldron's geometric centre 96 km north-east of Melbourne; it was not located more precisely than that for this pin.
