Chinchorro (Caleta Camarones)
Stretch of the Atacama coast in northern Chile where the Chinchorro fisher-people made the oldest artificial mummies known anywhere - two thousand years before Egypt. The dead were taken apart, reinforced with sticks and clay and given a modelled face, and the treatment was given to everyone: children, adults, the stillborn.
