Citadelle Laferrière
The largest fortress in the Americas, commissioned in 1805 by Henri Christophe atop a mountain in northern Haiti and built by up to 20,000 formerly enslaved workers to defend the newly independent nation against a French return that never came. One of few African-derived military fortifications in the New World, it stands as the first monument built by liberated slaves and remains a landmark of Haitian independence.
