Colonia del Sacramento
Uruguay's oldest town, founded in 1680 by Portuguese soldiers on a peninsula facing Buenos Aires across the Río de la Plata, then fought over and traded between Portugal and Spain for nearly a century and a half - its historic quarter is the region's only urban plan that breaks from Spain's rigid grid layout, fusing Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial architectural styles.
