Elephanta Caves
Rock-cut Shaiva temples on an island in Mumbai harbour, cut from the basalt rather than built on it. The seven-metre three-headed Trimurti in the main cave is among the great works of Indian sculpture; much of the rest is broken, and who broke it is still argued over.
