Eonile
A vast buried canyon carved by the Nile during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.96-5.33 million years ago), when the Mediterranean dried out and rivers cut far below the new, much lower base level. Near Cairo - the point used here - the buried channel reaches roughly 2,500 m below sea level; near Aswan the cut reached about 200 m below sea level. The canyon later refilled with sediment as the Mediterranean reflooded.
