Gorée Island
A small island off Dakar, Senegal, that from the 15th to 19th centuries was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast, held in succession by Portuguese, Dutch, English and French colonial powers - its Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) stands today as one of the world's most visited memorials to the Atlantic slave trade.
