Seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom on Okinawa, and the largest of the gusuku - fortified stone enclosures unlike anything on the Japanese mainland. Ryukyu traded across East and Southeast Asia as an independent kingdom for four and a half centuries before Japan annexed it in 1879.
