Herculaneum
Wealthier, smaller seaside neighbour of Pompeii, buried under some 20m of pyroclastic material in the same 79 CE eruption; the denser burial carbonized rather than incinerated wood, furniture and - in the Villa of the Papyri - an entire library of scrolls, still being deciphered with modern imaging over 75% of the town remains unexcavated beneath the modern town of Ercolano.
