Hwangnyongsa

Royal Buddhist temple at Gyeongju, South Korea, begun 553 under King Jinheung of Silla and not finished until 644. Its nine-storey wooden pagoda stood about 68 m and was the tallest structure in the region until Mongol invaders burned it in 1238; only the platform and stone bases survive. The 1972 excavation exposed the layout and some 40,000 artefacts, with systematic study from April 1976. COORDINATES: Wikidata 35.8375/129.2328 matches the OSM site node (0.1 km). The en-Wikipedia infobox gives 35.7889/129.2267, about 5.4 km south, and is not used here.
