Ise Grand Shrine
The chief shrine of Shinto, and a building that stays new by being rebuilt. Every twenty years the sanctuary is reconstructed on the adjacent plot from fresh cypress and the old one is taken down - a cycle of renewal running since the seventh century, so the architecture is ancient while no timber in it is.
