Karakorum (Orkhon Valley)
Capital of the Mongol Empire, founded by Genghis Khan and built up under his son Ögedei in the Orkhon Valley - for three decades the administrative heart from which the largest contiguous land empire in history was governed, in a valley already home to earlier Xiongnu, Göktürk and Uighur capitals over two millennia of nomadic statehood.
