Lost City Hydrothermal Field
A field of pale carbonate chimneys up to 60 metres tall on the Atlantis Massif in the mid-Atlantic, found in December 2000. Unlike black smokers it vents warm, alkaline water from reactions between seawater and mantle rock, making methane and hydrogen without life: a prime place to study how life may have begun.
