Marajó Island (Marajoara Culture)
The largest island at the mouth of the Amazon supported a stratified pre-Columbian society of perhaps over 100,000 people, who built earthen mounds and produced large, elaborately painted and incised ceramics - clear evidence that complex Amazonian societies existed long before European contact.
