Mookini Heiau

Luakini (sacrificial) temple on the windswept northern tip of Hawaii island, in the Kohala Historical Sites State Monument: a walled stone enclosure where the highest chiefs offered human sacrifice to the war god Ku. Mookini family tradition dates its founding to 480 by Kuamo'o Mo'okini and a rebuilding by the priest Pa'ao, who brought the Hawaiian religion; next to it lies Kamehameha Akahi Aina Hanau, the traditional birthplace of Kamehameha I in 1758. Named a National Historic Landmark in 1962, the first in Hawaii. Coordinates: Wikipedia 20.2572/-155.8767 and OSM 20.2576/-155.877 agree.
