Ohrid
One of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Europe, on the shore of Lake Ohrid - a roughly three-million-year-old lake among the oldest and deepest in Europe. Neolithic lakeside pile-dwelling settlements gave way to the Hellenistic town of Lychnidos and, later, a major centre of Byzantine art with the Balkans' oldest Slavic monastery and over 800 medieval icons.
