Pu'ukohola Heiau

A temple built to win an island: at Puukohola on Hawaii island, the kahuna Kapoukahi told Kamehameha I to raise a luakini heiau to the war god Kukailimoku. Kamehameha had held the Kona and Kohala districts since 1782 but eight years of battles had settled nothing. His brother Keliimaikai supervised thousands of workers, and the temple, about 224 by 100 feet, was finished in the summer of 1791 and dedicated with the body of his rival Keoua Kuahuula.
