Rangiriri Pā
Rangiriri Pā was a Kīngitanga defensive line of trenches and a central redoubt between the Waikato River and Lake Kopuera, strengthened in 1863 under the Waikato chief Te Wharepu. On 20 and 21 November 1863 more than 1,400 British troops under Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron attacked about 500 defenders from Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Hauā and other Waikato tribes. Both sides lost heavily, and 183 Māori were taken prisoner after raising a white flag, which opened the Waikato to invasion and land confiscation.
