Russell (Kororāreka)
Kororāreka, now Russell, on the Bay of Islands grew in the early 1800s into a busy whaling and trading port beside a Ngāpuhi settlement. Christ Church, built in 1835, is the oldest surviving church in New Zealand. On 11 March 1845, in the Flagstaff War, Ngāpuhi fighters under Hōne Heke and Te Ruki Kawiti felled the British flagstaff above the town and attacked it; the garrison and settlers withdrew by sea and much of the town burned.
