Shanidar Cave
Zagros Mountains cave in Iraqi Kurdistan holding Neanderthal remains excavated from 1953. Shanidar 1, a man who survived severe disabling injuries for years, is strong evidence of group care; Shanidar 4's 'flower burial' - once read as ritual grave-flowers - is now disputed, with burrowing rodents a likelier source of the pollen, though deliberate burial itself is still considered likely.
