Somapura Mahavihara (Paharpur)
The largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas, built in Bangladesh by the Pala king Dharmapala - a 27-acre complex of a central pyramidal shrine, hundreds of monks' cells and intricate terracotta plaques that drew scholars from Tibet and China, and whose distinctive stepped-pyramid temple form went on to directly influence later temple architecture in Myanmar and Java.
