Spiš Castle
One of the largest castle complexes in Europe, covering roughly 4 hectares on a hilltop in eastern Slovakia - rebuilt in the early 13th century against Mongol incursions and expanded through the Gothic era, before a 1780 fire led the Habsburg administration to abandon rather than rebuild it, leaving today's dramatic ruin alongside the walled ecclesiastical town of Spišská Kapitula.
