Subak of Bali
Balinese rice terraces run by subak: cooperative associations that share water through canals, tunnels and a hierarchy of water temples. Nearly 20,000 hectares are managed as one pulsed system, and the scheduling that makes it work is done through the temples rather than by an authority.
