Taftan
A 3,941 m stratovolcano in southeastern Iran, on the Makran subduction zone where the Arabian plate slides beneath Eurasia. Its last eruption is disputed: a radiometric date points to about 7,000 years ago, a 2025 study to none in some 700,000 years. Satellite radar detected roughly 9 cm of summit uplift starting mid-2023, alongside fresh fumarolic activity in 2024.
Dated events and their evidence
- 5,000 BCE disputed
most recent radiometrically dated eruption, about 6,950 +/- 20 years before present; a 2025 Geophysical Research Letters study reports no eruption in about 700,000 years source - 2023 CE mainstream
InSAR satellite data detects roughly 9 cm of ground uplift at the summit starting mid-2023, read by researchers as hydrothermal-system pressure rather than confirmed new magma movement source
