Troy
Anatolian mound at Hisarlik holding nine successive cities built one atop another across roughly 4,000 years; Heinrich Schliemann's controversial 1870 excavations sought Homer's legendary city, and while Troy VIIa shows real evidence of violent destruction around 1180 BCE, no find directly confirms a Greek siege - the Trojan War remains partly history, partly legend, honestly unresolved.
