Volubilis
A fortified Roman municipium at the foot of the Jebel Zerhoun in Morocco, first a Hellenistic centre under the Mauretanian king Juba II before its annexation by Rome - abandoned and never resettled for nearly a thousand years, which left its mosaics, statuary and inscriptions exceptionally well preserved and makes it one of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere in Africa.
